Ask your  child   about  . . .

*The first grade program was terrific! Well done class!
*PLEASE send (or e mail) in a cookie recipe by Friday, Dec. 14-  skeller@buhlerschools.org
*ask your child how many days they received $1 for following the rules
*watching the 3rd grade program on Thursday
 *show and tell on Friday *    reading a Christmas story each day
*NOVEMBER MONTHLY READING SHEETS are due
*December monthly reading sheets will be sent home on Monday- These may be returned after Christmas vacation.

                                          Math
*counting tens and ones  (ex.  3 tens and 7ones =37)  Place Value
*fact families  2 + 5 = 7    5 + 2 = 7 
7 - 2 = 5    7 - 5 = 2
*counting pennies, nickels and dimes-please help!
*using a number line to add or subtract
*reading a calendar
*identifying and continuing a pattern unit
*Brain Pop Junior math stories
*odd and even numbers
*identifying numbers to 120
*problem solving -when to add or subtract
*tally marks
*problem solving
*adding three numbers
*laptops in the classroom

                              Reading/Spelling/Writing
*reading centers  (reading group, computers/ipads, listening center, and literacy game center)
*Vowel Town Vowel sounds (ee as in feet, i as in fish, e as in net, a_e as in make, ai as in paint, ay as in day, a as in map, u as in bug, o as in mop, aw as in saw, o_e as in rope, oo as in stood,  and oo as in food, i_e as in ride,  u_e as in tune, ow as in cow and oy as in toy)
*identifying why  an author uses quotation marks
*discussing an author’s purpose (to persuade,
  inform and or entertain
*colored reading folders are sent home on Mondays and Thursdays, please continue to make the effort to get them returned to keep on this schedule
*new spelling lists are sent home each Friday- please begin practicing over the weekend
*retelling a story by thinking about what
happened in the beginning, middle and ending
*please have your child read their books (in their colored folder) MORE than once. They will feel more comfortable with the words and can pick up the pace (fluency) after several readings.
*writing neatly and using the lines correctly
*capital letters at the beginning of sentences and either a  period, a question mark or an exclamation point at the end
*clapping to find out how many syllables in a word
*putting words in alphabetical order
*identifying nouns
   
                                 Social Studies/Science
*characteristics of penguins and their habitat
*being a bucket filler  (character education)
*Personal Safety Awareness Program will begin Dec. 3 and go through Dec. 14. Presentations by teachers, law enforcement, and Horizons will aide in student education. The program shares general information to help students to be aware and feel secure.
