Ask your child about... (week of 11/05/12) *how many days did they get $1 for following the rules *music, P.E., and library activities *practicing for the upcoming first grade program (Tuesday, Nov. 27 at U.V.) Attendance required *FYI-picture retakes Nov. 13 *no school November 21, 22, and 23 *our new song- Coins In My Hand *sharing Turkey in Trouble (turkey in disguise stories and pictures) MATH *counting nickels and dimes *determining if a number is even or odd *tangrams and math tiles *graphs and tally marks *subtraction/addition-please practice for memorization *practice math flashcards that were sent home at conferences *using a number line to add or subtract *number recognition from 1-100 *what number is before, after or between a given number or numbers *choose a number and work with your child to practice facts that have that sum ex. practice all the facts that have the sum of 5. 5+0, 0+5, 1+4, 4+1, 2+3, 3+2 *telling time to the hour *place value ex.- 57 = 5 tens and 7 ones *activities in math stations *number sequences showing 10 more ex. 4, 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, etc. *fact families ex. 2+3=5 3+2=5 5-3=2 5-2=3 WRITING *capital letters at the beginning of sentences and either a period, a question mark or an exclamation point at the end *including information in our stories to tell who, what, when, where, and why *noun (person, place, thing or animal), verb (action word), adjective (a word that describes the noun) *writing neatly and using the correct placement on the lines *sentences with quotation marks READING/SPELLING *reading centers (daily) *The book Silly Milly- She only likes things that are spelled with double letters- Ex. umbrellas, alligators, grass, jelly, etc. *discussing stories that we have read to demonstrate an understanding of the story *spelling words and sentences *when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and says it’s name *ee sound as in three, a e sound as in cake, ai sounds as in rain *please go over any word lists that have been sent home *please have your child read their books (in their colored folder) MORE than once. They will feel more comfortable with the words and can pick up the pace (fluency) after several readings. *colored reading folders are sent home on Mondays and Thursdays, please continue to make the effort to get them returned to keep on this schedule *Thanksgiving stories *reading from our book boxes SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES *Pilgrims and Native Americans *locating various places on the globe and map *Thanksgiving *being a bucket filler (showing character) *Veteran’s Day (thanks for sending in names) *election results *famous buildings in Washington D.C. AND SO MUCH MORE!
